Sexyy Red reveals she has voted for Kamala Harris, despite past comments supporting Donald Trump

Sexyy Red has revealed that she’s voted for Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the ongoing US presidential election, despite her past comments supporting Republican nominee Donald Trump.

In a social media post published today (November 1), Red shared pictures of herself posing with ‘I Voted’ stickers plastered on her behind. She tweets: “I just voted!!! Don’t tell us what to do with our coochies!!” with the hashtag #Kamala4President.

Her tweet today alludes to the issue of abortion rights, which Harris has supported in her campaign – and on which Trump has flip-flopped several times.

Understandably, fans reacted in shock, as Red has been vocally supportive of Trump in the past. In late-2023, Red was a guest on the Theo Von-hosted podcast This Past Weekend, where she said, emphatically, “I like Trump”.

“They support him in the hood. At first I don’t think people was fucking with him. They thought he was racist, saying little shit against women. But once he started getting Black people out of jail and giving people that free money. Aww baby, we love Trump.”

“We need him back in office. We need him back because, baby, them checks. Them stimulus checks. Trump, we miss you.”

She also thought Trump was “just bold”, “funny” and that “we need people like him”. However, her sudden change of tune shouldn’t come as a complete surprise – Red has never officially gone on record to endorse Trump for presidency.

In June, Red received criticism for her live show’s stage production, which features a giant inflatable red cap adorned with “Make America Sexyy Again”.

Red then took to X/Twitter to respond to the backlash and issue a disclaimer: “I’m my own candidate. I’m not endorsing anybody, period.” In July, she was also quick to debunk a rumour that she was set to perform at a Trump rally, tweeting: “Dey fakin dats cap”.

TIME notes that, in a March 2024 interview, Trump suggested that he would support a 15-week national ban on abortions – with exceptions for special cases, like rape, incest, or when the life of the pregnant person is at risk.

“I don’t think Americans know whether Donald Trump has a solid and settled position on abortion,” political consultant Barrett Marson told TIME, “so predicting what he would do with any potential abortion law, as unlikely as it is to make it to his desk, I don’t think we can predict that.”

In a 2023 interview with NME, Red, who has two children, spoke about what it means to show – notably, in her Summer Walker collaboration ‘Sense Dat God Gave You’ – that mothers can engage in rap culture without making sacrifices: “Remember, back in the day, people would be like, ‘No, I can’t have kids right now because I’m rapping. I’m on the road, I’m doing this shit’.”

“But now they make it acceptable for girls to have babies. For real. All the female rappers are pregnant and got kids now if you ask me. They still make money. They still doing they thing.”

Red is set to perform at Tyler, the Creator‘s Camp Flog Gnaw next month alongside headliners Playboi CartiErykah BaduAndré 3000, along with Kaytranada, Vince StaplesOmar ApolloFaye WebsterDoechiiRAYE, and Tyler himself, amongst others.
