With the current success of Nigerian musicians like Wizkid and Davido in international markets, you wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking that the next frontier for our musicians to conquer would be markets outside Nigeria.
However, there are still musicians who feel the Nigerian market is enough for them. So there isn’t really any need to look for international collabo’s or record deals. Also, it is important to note that those who have spoken in the same vein are those who refer to themselves as ‘Local rappers’. The likes of Olamide, and Lil Kesh have already made their thoughts known about the issue. Now, popular rapper Reminisce has joined in.
Reminisce who recently released his fourth studio album El Hadj In Yoruba language said: Wizkid Lo Help drake olorun! wizkid ti debe won bo wa ko awa iyoku Meaning “There is nothing like international collaboration for me, what do you mean by international market? Should I be sounding like Chris Brown or what? International market means sounding like Reminisce, and they would definitely come. The reason for this is because our artistes here are making it big time over there.
“Wizkid helped Drake, so they are definitely coming here for the rest of us, but that not my priority right now. My priority is to give my fans good music and whatever comes with it, promote, do what I am suppose to do. So for me, that’s not a tick whether I have succeeded or not, if it comes fine, and if it does not same goes”.
Now that we see different opinions from our musicians regarding this issue, we must not see getting an international collabo or record deal or not getting one as a bad thing. Everyone is free to choose what he or she wants.
