Photos: Osogbo stands still as Osun/Osogbo festival climaxes
The annual Osun/Osogbo festival in Nigeria’s south western state of Osun remains one of the most attended and cherished celebrations in Yorubaland.
Every year, people from all over the world gather in the state to worship the goddess of the Osun river (Yeye Osun), who is more prominent for her ability to make barren women conceive and deliver as many children as they desire.
This year’s event which will climax on Friday, August 19, is nothing near the recent past celebrations; the economic situation in the country is said to have slowed things down.
Regardless of this, however, the proud indigenes of Osun are determined to keep the celebration as lively and as eventful as it has always been.
More significant this year, was the presence of heavy rainfall in the state. And when our correspondent asked around if this rainfall is a good or bad sign, it was gathered that it was more like an ‘amen’ to the people’s requests.
“It simply means that the Yeye is happy with everybody and every request being made will be granted by the river goddess,” the lady with the Arugbas stated.
One of those who came for the festival from Ikorodu area of Lagos state, noted that people were expected to storm the state in the midnight. While trying to convince our correspondent on why he should shift base to traditional worship, the man who identified himself as Oshagbemi, said:
“The white men brought their religions to take away our traditional ways of worshiping the deities of our land. “I can assure you that this year’s celebration will go down memory lane as one of the most attended and most glamorous in recent years.”
Lag-online.tk will bring sights and sounds from the grand finale of the festival your way on Friday, when the event will be most attended.
